Commissioner’s response to Welsh Government’s Nation of Sanctuary statement

Responding to a Welsh Government statement on A Nation of Sanctuary in the Senedd on 11 February, Rocio Cifuentes MBE said:

This continues to be a time of divisive rhetoric, threatening to harm community cohesion, wellbeing, and in some cases, the safety of refugees and asylum seekers. It’s important therefore to see the Welsh Government reaffirm its commitment to a Nation of Sanctuary, and its aim to create strong and cohesive communities where all people have the chance to thrive. Whilst welcoming this repeated commitment, I’d also like to see the Welsh Government do more to reflect the concerns and experiences of children and young people who are seeking sanctuary in Wales, and committing to meet their specific needs. This includes making free school meal eligibility a reality for all children regardless of their parents’ immigration status, and confirming their support for the implementation of a National Guardianship service for all unaccompanied children in Wales, and outlining how they’ll pursue this.”
