Keith Towler, Children’s Commissioner for Wales, has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty, Jeff Cuthbert AM, that a full independent review of the role and remit of the Children’s Commissioner for Wales is to be undertaken in the near future.
The review will look at the legislative remit, scrutiny and governance arrangements of the Commissioner and will be independent of Welsh Government.
Keith Towler, Children’s Commissioner for Wales, commented:
“I look forward to engaging with the Minister and his officials to develop the details of this important review. I have previously publicly stated the need for an independent review and I am pleased that the Minister feels that the time is right to undertake such a review.
“Safeguarding and promoting the rights of children and young people in Wales is of critical importance. We live in a country that recognises children as rights holders and the first country in the UK to have passed a law about children’s rights so, I would expect Welsh Government to continue to further develop their commitment to effectively implementing and upholding the rights of children and young people in Wales”.
