⭐️ The value of youth work ⭐️
😊 The Commissioner was delighted to address the CWVYS Youth Work conference earlier this month.
👏 It was an opportunity for Rocio to thank the sector for its incredibly important work in supporting young people to access their rights, to reflect the ways we’ve worked with youth groups across Wales to shine a light on a variety of issues affecting children, and to reaffirm her commitment to continue working with the sector to achieve positive change.
The ALN Act ‘fallen short of its goal’
🔴 In a hard-hitting piece for Wales Online, the Commissioner outlined some of the testimonies we’ve heard from parents fighting for the right additional learning needs support for their children. It includes a child without formal education for 18 months, and parents highlighting the struggle of navigating an often complex and frustrating system.

🥗 🛝⚽️ ‘Make the healthy choice the easy choice’
💬 The Commissioner was pleased to give evidence to the Senedd’s Health and Social Care Committee in their inquiry into the prevention of obesity.
✅We need to make the healthy choice the easy choice for children, young people and families, and ensure our schools and communities enable opportunities for physical exercise and good nutrition for all.

🚍 A truly positive announcement for children
👏 The news that children and young people would benefit from reduced bus fares next year was warmly welcomed by the Commissioner:
‘This is a truly positive announcement for children and young people in Wales. I have called for free public transport for children since becoming Children’s Commissioner – noting the positive impact this would have on mental health and connectedness, whilst also helping families with soaring costs and helping make Wales greener. And whilst this isn’t the free public transport I’ve called for, it’s a brilliant step in the right direction and should be warmly welcomed – I’m certain this will have a very positive effect on children’s lives across Wales.’
🏠 Thanks to everyone for another month of visits!
❤️ Thanks to all the schools and youth groups who we’ve had the pleasure of working with this month – for letting us hear your views, and for taking part in our workshops on children’s rights. They’ve included a visit to Ysgol Brynhyfryd who are celebrating their 150th birthday this year. Here’s to the next 150!
