To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the UNCRC, we’ve published new lesson plans to help teach children in the foundation phase about their rights.
We’ve also made a brand new childrens’ rights song for schools.
It’s all part of our Bitw Bach project, which has seen us working with schools from across Wales to develop new resources for our youngest learners.
We worked with 13 settings across Wales to shape the lesson plans and resources. We would like to thank teachers and pupils at: Ty Isaf Infants School, YsgolGymraeg Coed y Gof, YsgolGymraegGwenllian, Llantarnam Community Primary School, Malpas Court Primary School, YsgolPenrhyn New Broughton Primary, Rachel’s Playhouse, Welshpool Church in Wales.
This pack includes eight lesson plans. Throughout the lessons, children will explore the things they need to grow up happy, healthy and safe (their children’s rights).
Although children under 16 cannot vote in the Senedd elections, all children in Wales have the right to be listened to and taken seriously (Article 12).
Children may feel that some of their rights are currently being denied, or they may be passionate about a particular issue, and want to make a change.
We have prepared two lessons on Senedd elections and democracy for you to do in class.
Each lesson in the Bitw Bach pack begins with the song “We Stand Together”, this song explores children’s rights and talks about the things children need to grow up happy, healthy and safe. The song was written and composed by Sara Lewis, Dyfan Jones and Year 3 from Creigiau Primary School.
The song is a fantastic opener to each lesson and brings a sense of familiarity for pupils. We suggest singing the song in a circle with your class, with you leading actions (you may want to use Makaton Signs).
These beautiful illustrations were created by 4 Welsh based artists, to help teach children about their rights, organised under the 4 themes of the UNCRC: Development, Survival, Protection, Participation. We’ve put together some suggestions for how to use the picture pack.
